MDN Chairs Session on Syrian Refugees' Employment During WHS
MDN President Murat Daoudov chaired the session on employment of Syrians in Turkey held in Istanbul on 23 May 2016, in the framework of the World Humanitarian Summit (WHS). The side event called “Employment of Syrians under Temporary Protection Status in Turkey and Their Access to Labour Market” was co-organized by Directorate General of Labour of the Turkish Ministry of Labour and Social Security and İŞKUR (Turkish Employment Agency).
The event gathered Nurcan Önder, Director General of Labour, Mehmet Ali Özkan, Director General of İŞKUR, Amb. Musa Kulaklıkaya, Director General of Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC) from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (IOC), Numan Özcan, Director of International Labour Organization (ILO) Office for Turkey, Marina Manke, Senior Specialist of International Organization of Migration (IOM) from South Eastern Europe, Eastern Europe and Central Asia Regional Office, and Damla Taşkın, Livelihoods Officer for Turkey and MENA Region of UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
The panel discussed the situation of Syrian refugees in Turkey in regard with work permits, employment strategies, vocational training courses and entrepreneurship programs and access to financial resources. The activity has also received coverage by the Turkish media, while MDN continues its expert involvement in migration and refugee fields through various platforms and media appearances.
Following the side event, MDN team members Mehdi Zouaoui, Elif Şentürk and Nihal Ben Mansour visited the stand areas of the WHS and interacted with number of participating organizations, including the stand of Professionals in Humanitarian Assistance and Protection. Murat Daoudov gave interview to PHAP and spoke about the session as well as about the summit outcomes.
